Hurricane Sandy Response Update

The scope of damage left by Hurricane Sandy has been both devastating and wide spread with thousands of people still suffering. In a continued effort to provide help to affected utilities and their customers, ABB has instituted a multi-pronged approach in response to this natural disaster.

Led by our Medium Voltage service center in Warminster, Pennsylvania, ABB is directly engaged and facilitating the restoration process by 1) providing equipment assessments and corrective action guidance for customers who are beginning to evaluate the damage and 2) supplying restoration products and services to those affected.  ABB has also announced a donation to the Hurricane Sandy Relief effort and agreed to match qualifying employee donations, dollar for dollar.

Throughout these past several days, ABB response teams representing each of our facilities have coordinated efforts to respond to our Utility customers needs in an effort to minimize service downtime and hardship for their customers.  For example, in New Jersey where there are major outages due to flooding and wind, our Pinetops, North Carolina cutout team worked around the clock to produce and expedite shipment of thousands of cutouts. In New York, new ABB Relion® relays and replacement doors are being expedited for Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of a much larger retrofit project. And in Cleveland, Ohio and across New Jersey where there are still 900,000 out of power, ABB has over 20 Medium and High Voltage Service technicians on the ground working with the U.S. Naval Shipyard and First Energy maintenance crews. These service teams are working diligently to get customers back up and running.

In both New York and New Jersey, we are leveraging our Thomas & Betts (T&B) facilities to provide resources and staging areas to assist our customers in their relief efforts.  In Pinetops, personnel are working long hours and weekends to meet the needs of utilities and customers. In Coral Springs, Florida, ABB employees worked over the weekend to expedite key relays and FT switches for emergency response. And in Lake Mary, Florida, manufacturing capacity has been earmarked to provide shortened product lead times for outdoor circuit breakers, reclosers and switchgear. Teams from each of the facilities were sent out to assess storm related damage across the affected region. Additionally, we’ve waived or greatly reduced expediting charges to assist those in need.

The ABB Foundation has also made a donation to the American Red Cross that will go out immediately to help those most affected by the storm. To learn more about the ABB response and recovery efforts, please view the details HERE.
